Paris Vacation - 4th Arrondissement
Paris Vacation in the 4th Arrondissement in the Marais

Situated in the heart of Le Marais in the charming Place du Marché Sainte-Catherine, this Paris studio apartment is on the first floor of an 18th century flat and is perfectly located for many Paris monuments, museums and parks.

Le Marais (which is French for "the marsh") is traditionally a bourgeois area, but is also well-known historically.

Map of the area near this 4th Arrondissement apartmentYou'll find a host of both famous and lesser-known museums within walking distance of your apartment, including the Musée Cognacq-Jay.

The museum's collection was formed by the founders of the popular Samaritaine department store during the early 1920s, and although it used to be housed near the Opéra Garnier, it was moved to its current location in Le Marais in 1990.

Housing about 1,200 items, it contains an exception collection of fine art and decorative items.

Photo of Picasso MuseumJust around the corner from there is the Musée National Picasso, dedicated to the life and works of the famous Pablo Picasso. The building itself is fairly ordinary, while the "art" is very definitely extra-ordinary. (We have to confess that we just don't "get" Picasso's paintings, but it's definitely worth a visit nonetheless.)

Very close to the Picasso museum is a small and relatively unknown place called the Musée Bricard, which is dedicated to locks and keys. We realise this is not everybody's cup of tea, but again, we found it very fascinating, and they do occasionally have special exhibitions down in the basement (when we were there, it was all about the art of painting on glass).

Photo of Musee CarnavaletBut maybe the most famous museum in Le Marais is the Musée Carnavalet (although it was expanded in the 1980s to include a neighbouring building as they had too many exhibits).

The main building dates back to the 16th century and was, for a short while, home to Madame de Sévigné, while the museum, which is dedicated to the history of Paris, was first opened to the public as long ago as 1880.

The highlights of this museum are too numerous to mention here, but be assured that you won't be disappointed.

Photo of Place des VosgesIf you've had enough of being a culture vulture and want to get out and about, then your apartment is only a few minutes' walk away from the Place des Vosges.

Originally constructed as a royal palace, before they decamped to the Louvre, it later was home to many famous people, including the afore-mentioned Madame de Sévigné, Victor Hugo and Cardinal Richelieu, and today it is a public park, where you'll find people having their lunch, children playing and the athletic types jogging or cycling.

Photo of Place de la BastilleA little further afield, you'll find the Place de la Bastille, which is where the infamous Bastille prison used to be located - until the French Revolution.

For entertainment, and providing you enjoy the art of magic, then you'll find the fascinating Musée de la Magie in Rue Saint-Paul (where they also put on live shows many days), as well as the Double Fond, owned by one of France's premier magicians, Dominique Duvivier, where you can eat, drink and watch live magic - all just a few feet from your apartment.

If shopping is your thing, then this studio apartment is close to the Rue de Rivoli, where you'll find most of what you could possibly want, and if you've got the time and energy to see other parts of Paris (as you could easily spend a few entire days just in Le Marais), which of course are not to be missed, then you have access to three different Metro stations - St. Paul, Pont Marie and Bastille.

So, if a bit of history and culture is what appeals to you, then you won't find a better location in which to spend your Paris vacation than this Paris flat.
